“Inhalable” H1N1 Vaccine Contains Live Virus; Available Soon

September 19, 2009

If you have been paying attention than you already know that the vaccines being produced will contain a live virus. What was a surprise to me was that it will be available in a spray. Does that not seem like the worst idea ever, how will the live virus be contained when people are spraying this in the air? -ed

Story Highlights

  • Inhalable vaccine available only between ages 2 and 49; not for pregnant women
  • Some flu shots will be available in early October as well
  • New H1N1 has not changed much from earlier virus, officials say
  • 21 states are now reporting widespread flu activity

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) — Health officials expect more than 3 million doses of H1N1 flu vaccine to be available in the first week of October.

“3.4 million doses of vaccines will be available,” said Dr. Jay Butler, who heads the 2009 H1N1 Vaccine Task Force at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“All of that vaccine is the inhalable vaccine,” he said Friday.

That form of vaccine is marketed in the United States as FluMist and is approved only for healthy individuals between the ages of 2 and 49. Pregnant women are not allowed to get this type of vaccine because it contains a live virus.

Sonoma County Swine Flu Hype

August 30, 2009

In an article published on Saturday, the Press Democrat reminds us the Swine Flu (hype) is here to stay.

One day after announcing the sixth death related to swine flu in Sonoma County, public health officer Mary Maddux-Gonzalez said Saturday that the virus is so prevalent that “efforts to stop it from spreading, such as school or workplace closures, would have little effect.”

The sixth case in Sonoma County follows the trend of the previous five (1, 2, 3, 4, 5,) in many ways. All victims share the existence of previous heart/lung conditions.

But by midnight Saturday, Victor, who county officials said had a pre-existing medical condition stemming from open heart surgery when he was a newborn, became “unresponsive” and was taken back to Memorial Sunday morning..

Only a third of nurses willing to have swine flu vaccine: poll

August 18, 2009

source: Telegraph UK

Frontline health and social care workers will be among the first to be vaccinated in October along with people with serious underlying health problems and pregnant women.

However a survey by Nursing Times has found many frontline nurses have reservations.

Only one in three said they are prepared to have the H1N1 vaccine with a third undecided and the rest saying no.

Almost 1,500 nurses were polled, of whom 91 per cent said they were frontline.

It comes after news that parents are also concerned about the vaccine, with worries predominantly about the safety of its contents, side effects, and the amount of testing that will be done.

Of the nurses who said they would not get vaccinated, 60 per cent said concern about the safety of the vaccine was the main reason.

A further 31 per cent said they did not consider the risks to their health from swine flu to be great enough, while nine per cent thought they would not be able to take time out of work to get immunised.

“I would not be willing to put myself at risk of, as yet, unknown long-term effects to facilitate a short-term solution,” said one respondent.

A further respondent said: “I have yet to be convinced there is a genuine health risk (from swine flu) and it’s not just government propaganda.”

Europe fast-tracking swine flu vaccine

July 27, 2009

According to the Center for Disease Control there are only 302 confirmed deaths in the U.S. from the  swine flu. The World Health Organization has tallied 429 deaths worldwide, only 200 deaths in the U.S. A week ago when the WHO announced that they would “stop counting” the cases of swine flu, another key to this puzzle was mentioned, perhaps explaining the difference in numbers of cases and also the WHO’s reason’s to stop counting cases:

“Many epidemiologists have pointed out that, in reality, millions of people have had swine flu, usually in mild form, so the numbers of laboratory-confirmed cases were actually meaningless. And performing the tests has overwhelmed many national laboratories”

So with the regular flu the WHO says at least 36,000 people die a year, coming no where near to the death rate of the swine flu, why are the vaccine’s being pushed? Well 1976 offers some clue’s, but there is more to this….As I said in a previous article published elsewhere, I will not take a vaccine. (Especially from Baxter!)   -ed

LONDON — In a drive to inoculate people against swine flu before winter, many European governments say they will fast-track the testing of a vaccine, arousing concern among some experts about safety and proper doses.

The European Medicines Agency, the EU’s top drug regulatory body, is accelerating the approval process for swine flu vaccine, and countries such as Britain, Greece, France and Sweden say they’ll start using the vaccine after it’s greenlighted — possibly within weeks.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, the World Health Organization’s flu chief, warned about the potential dangers of untested vaccines, although he stopped short of criticizing Europe’s approach outright.

Barack Opharma issues the ultimate bad news during his weekly Friday night bad news dump: Legal immunity set for swine flu vaccine makers 17 Jul 2009 The last time the government embarked on a major vaccine campaign against a new swine flu, thousands filed claims contending they suffered side effects [paralysis, death] from the shots. This time, the government has already taken steps to head that off. Vaccine makers and federal officials will be immune from lawsuits that result from any new swine flu vaccine, under a document signed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, government health officials said Friday. The document signed by Sebelius last month grants immunity to those making a swine flu vaccine, under the provisions of a 2006 law for public health emergencies.

Baxter can take no more H1N1 flu vaccine orders16 Jul 2009 While at least 50 governments have placed orders or are negotiating with drug companies for supplies of flu vaccine against the [their] fast spreading H1N1 strain, the lone U.S.-based maker has already taken on as much as it can handle. Baxter International Inc said on Thursday it has taken orders from five countries, including Britain, Ireland and New Zealand, for a total of 80 million doses of H1N1 vaccine and will not take any more.

‘Clearly we believe this demand has the potential to translate into a significant opportunity.’ Baxter 2Q Profit Up 7.9%; Full-Year Guidance Raised 16 Jul 2009 Baxter International Inc. posted a stronger-than-expected 7.9% rise in second-quarter profit with help from improved margins and product sales that continued to avoid any hits from the economic downturn. The medical-products maker boosted its 2009 earnings guidance while saying the increase doesn’t reflect at this point any contribution from making a vaccine for the H1N1 flu strain. Baxter reported a second-quarter profit of $587 million, or 96 cents a share, up from $544 million, or 85 cents a share, a year earlier.

He says Baxter has patented technology that allows the company to develop vaccines in half the time it usually takes — about 13 weeks instead of 26.

Legal immunity set for swine flu vaccine makers

By MIKE STOBBE (AP) – 18 hours ago

ATLANTA — The last time the government embarked on a major vaccine campaign against a new swine flu, thousands filed claims contending they suffered side effects from the shots. This time, the government has already taken steps to head that off.

Vaccine makers and federal officials will be immune from lawsuits that result from any new swine flu vaccine, under a document signed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, government health officials said Friday.

Since the 1980s, the government has protected vaccine makers against lawsuits over the use of childhood vaccines. Instead, a federal court handles claims and decides who will be paid from a special fund.

The document signed by Sebelius last month grants immunity to those making a swine flu vaccine, under the provisions of a 2006 law for public health emergencies. It allows for a compensation fund, if needed.

The government takes such steps to encourage drug companies to make vaccines, and it’s worked. Federal officials have contracted with five manufacturers to make a swine flu vaccine. First identified in April, swine flu has so far caused about 263 deaths, according to numbers released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday.
