US Media and the Mark Walhberg Apology

The US media is especially proud of standing up for the victims of 9/11 by self righteously reporting the apology from Walhberg.Why is it that an actor is able to apologize for insensitive comments but intelligence officials and agents won’t explain let alone apologize for getting a bunch of people killed? When US media could have stood up for the victims in a substantive way they failed to do so. As recently as September 2011, 60 Minutes countered former FBI agent Ali Soufan’s credible accusation of CIA withholding of information by way of a CIA talking point:

The CIA told us any suggestion it purposely refused to share critical information on the 9/11 plots with FBI is “baseless” and “these allegations diminish the hard work and dedication of countless CIA officers.”

This is journalism? Soufan (and others) have already credible demonstrated that the withholding was deliberate. The question then is why did CIA and FBI UBLU officials and agents withhold the information? For unknown reasons the US media will not use their access to power to get an answer. US media has never interviewed Rich Blee, chief of CIA’s Alec Station in the lead up to 9/11 or Rod Middleton, chief of the FBI Bin Laden unit (UBLU) in the lead up to 9/11. Blee was even promoted after 9/11! How on earth could the media not ask Tenet to account for this?

There is a total disconnect in US society in regard to 9/11. Actors are pressured to apologize for making comments that are disrespectful to the victims while US officials and intelligence agents who obstructed al Qaeda investigations before 9/11 are given a complete pass by the US media. If anyone should apologize to 9/11 victims it should be the US media.

Al Jazeera: Sceptics Cast Doubt on Events of 9/11

On the 11th day of every month, a group of a dozen or so people gather on Hollywood Boulevard to hang a banner over a freeway overpass. The banner reads: “9/11 = Controlled Demolition”. The group hands out DVDs and pamphlets to drivers passing by.

Call them the True Disbelievers. They are members of a persistent tribe of sceptics that believes the official version of what happened in New York, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon a decade ago is nothing but a colossal lie.

This is one of my favorite stories since starting the Sept. 11 anniversary assignment. It’s about people who don’t believe the government’s story of how 9/11 happened. The guys in the North Texans for 9/11 Truth group were especially helpful to me.

One of the things that has surprised me while doing this assigment over the past three months is that so many people feel the government isn’t telling the whole truth about 9/11. Most of the people who feel this way are just regular folks, people I meet while traveling. DALLAS (AP) — In Dealey Plaza, with the white “X” painted on the spot where President Kennedy was assassinated, ask anyone about the grassy knoll and the second gunman.

Conspiracy theories come with the territory here. And at Barbec’s Restaurant on the other side of this sprawling city, six men sit on a covered porch and convene a meeting of the North Texans for 9/11 Truth group and talk about the government’s lies about 9/11.

The group has 50 active members; 200 on the mailing list. And they number among many thousands who, after years of investigations, don’t believe the official version of how the World Trade Center collapsed, who was responsible or what the government knew and when.

Politics doesn’t have anything to do with it; two were once staunch, Bush-voting conservatives; two are progressives and two weren’t even interested in current events until after the 2001 attacks.

“Before 9/11, I was a working class person, going through life, pretty much accepting everything given and told to me,” said Bryan Black, a 50-year-old carpenter from Commerce, Texas, “I’m starting to see things. I’m more open to skeptical conversation.”

Hacking the Saudis

Breathlessly, six members of Congress have requested that the FBI investigate the “outrageous” allegations that News Corp might have hacked into the cell phones of 9/11 victims and their families. Lickety split, the Justice Department has done so.

First off, does it surprise me that a corporation like News Corp. might try to hack into the information of private citizens for their own financial gain? Nope.

Much like it wouldn’t surprise me if my own government hacked into the private information of its citizens for political gain or… er, I mean, “reasons of national security.” Just ask Dick Cheney and Karl Rove about that.

It’s rare that two media watchdogs – one on the left and one on the right – ever agree when it comes to assessing coverage on the cable news outlets.

But both the conservative Newsbusters and liberal Media Matters are aiming fire at Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera and Judge Andrew Napolitano for recently suggesting the third building to fall on September 11, 2001 – 7 World Trade Center- may have collapsed for reasons beside the widely held belief that fire from the two World Trade Center towers nearby was the ultimate cause.

In a segment that aired on his program more than two weeks ago, Rivera reported on those who claim the building’s collapse was more consistent with that which would occur from explosive devices.

“I’m certainly much more open-minded about it than I was,” Rivera said of the alternate possibility for the building’s fall.

9/11 Families Demand Apology from Media Matters

Responding to a series of hit pieces by self-declared “media watchdog” website Media Matters, a public advocacy group representing 9/11 family members has demanded an apology.

NYCCAN, the group responsible for airing ads urging an investigation into the destruction of World Trade Center Building 7, has issued a statement applauding FOX News hosts Andrew Napolitano and Geraldo Rivera for their fair treatment of the subject and rebuking Media Matters and The Huffington Post for their biased coverage.

An excerpt from the statement:

On November 29, Media Matters published an article entitled, “9/11 Victim Families Criticize Judge Napolitano Comments,” in which four 9/11 family members were quoted as attacking Judge Napolitano, without a single mention of the more than one-hundred 9/11 family members from NYC CAN who share Napolitano’s skepticism. One family member quoted in the article went as far as to say, “Anybody who talks about that is obviously not a family member and just trying to stir the pot and cause controversy.”

Keith Olbermann had to take a shot at people who question the official 9/11 account, even if just a little bit.

Olbermann has called for Roger Ailes to fire Judge Andrew Napolitano for his 9/11 “truth” related comments made during a radio interview. All of that follows the Geraldo episode featuring mechanical engineer Tony Szamboti and 9/11 family member Bob McIlvaine discussing the curious nature of  the WTC #7 collaspe.

On November 13, Bob McIlvaine and Tony Szamboti appeared on Geraldo Rivera’s show “Geraldo At Large” on Fox News to talk about the “BuildingWhat?”  TV ad campaign and World Trade Center Building 7 for a short segment.

Geraldo Rivera has long been an anti 9-11 truth journalist, as he himself pointed out by showing a clip from Truth Rising: The 9/11 Chronicles Part One in which 9/11 demonstrators tried to get his attention during a live show — something that Rivera and his crew didn’t enjoy. But tonight’s Rivera’s short segment on BuildingWhat? also turned out to be a public mea culpa before his audience of over 1 million people.

“It is an intriging topic. I certainly am much more open about it than I was, and it is because of the involvement of the 9/11 families and all these engineers and architects. Clearly they know more than I do.”
